Our History
Strides for Life originated in 1978 when two Grand Rapids men ran 250 miles
from their home town to the Mackinac Bridge to raise money for the American
Cancer Society. Although the course and distance have changed, the numbers are
greater in both participants and proceeds. Grand Rapids remains the headquarters
and planning center for this event.
Our Track record
In the past twenty-nine years, "Strides" participants have collected over $740,000
for the American Cancer Society. Because of the substantial
amount of goods and services that are donated to us by people and businesses
who support our cause, our out-of-pocket expenses have averaged just over
9 per cent annually.
Who can enter?
Entries are open to those physically fit to run the distance they choose, whether all
four days, or just a day or two. (anyone under age 18 must submit a letter of application,
written by your parent or guardian, describing your experience and training.)
The "Strides" committee retains the right to reject any application submitted.
If you can't run... Join us as a member of the support team!
While some members of our support team are very specialized in their roles, others
wear many hats--they set up aid stations and rest stops, prepare most of our
meals, drive and service the support vehicles, run errands, make sure we're in the
right places at the right time, and generally do their very best to take good care
of the runners.
Entry fee
The entry fee for Strides for Life is $25 and is nonrefundable. This fee covers the
cost of postage and fund-raising material. (Your meals, housing, awards, T-shirt,
runner packet, transportation, etc, are provided at no additional cost. $25 for Support staff
is suggested but is optional.)
